Bayern Munich’s dreams of an unbeaten Bundesliga season were shattered by a 2-1 defeat to Augsburg on Saturday at the Allianz Arena in Matchday 19.
Bayern took the lead in the first half through Hiroki Ito, but Augsburg stunned everyone with two second-half goals from Arthur Chaves and Han Noah Masengo, securing a historic victory.
The match saw Bayern field a starting lineup with an average age of 26 years and 125 days, the youngest in the Bundesliga this season, and the impact was clearly visible on the pitch.
This defeat marks Bayern’s second loss in all competitions this season, following their Champions League defeat to Arsenal last November, and their first Bundesliga loss in 10 months.
Despite the loss, Bayern Munich remains at the top of the Bundesliga table with a significant lead over their closest rivals.
The Bavarian giants currently sit atop the Bundesliga table with 50 points, while Borussia Dortmund are in second place with 39 points. If Dortmund win this season, the gap between the two sides will widen to eight points.
It’s worth noting that Bayern Munich have never won the Bundesliga title, and Bayer Leverkusen, under Xabi Alonso, remain the only team to have achieved this feat without a single defeat.
