Xabi Alonso is about to win his first title as a coach in his career, after Bayern Munich stumbled by losing 3-2 to Heidenheim in the 28th round of the Bundesliga.
At the same time, Bayer Leverkusen succeeded in returning from the German capital by defeating Union Berlin 1-0, paving the way to winning the Bundesliga next week.
The difference between Leverkusen and Bayern Munich widened to 16 points, with 6 rounds remaining until the end of the competition.
Thus, Xabi Alonso’s squad needed only two points in order to officially win its first historical title in the Bundesliga, and with it break Bayern Munich’s 12-year monopoly on the title.
In the next round, Leverkusen is scheduled to meet Werder Bremen at the BayArena, and winning the match will make the Pharmaceutical Factory team officially champion of the Bundesliga.
It remains to be noted that in 28 matches in the Bundesliga this season, Leverkusen has not suffered any defeat, and thus it has equaled the historical record recorded by Bayern Munich in the 2013-14 season with Pep Guardiola.
