Bayern Munich crushes Atalanta 6-1

Bayern Munich thrashed Atalanta 6-1 in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie.

Atalanta, who had eliminated fellow German giants Borussia Dortmund in the playoffs, were hoping to repeat their feat, this time against the Bavarian powerhouse.

But Bayern Munich stunned the Bergamo side with a first-half hat-trick from Josip Stanicic, Michael Ulise, and Serge Gnabry, before Nicolas Jackson, Ulise again, and Jamal Musiala added three more goals in the second half.

Mario Pasalic scored a consolation goal for Atalanta in the final minute.

With this emphatic victory, Bayern Munich have virtually secured their place in the quarterfinals, as Atalanta would need to win by five goals at the Allianz Arena in the second leg – a near-impossible task.

Bayern Munich will meet the winner of the Manchester City vs. Real Madrid match in the quarter-finals next April.
