Barcelona announced in an official statement the dismissal of its coach, Xavi Hernandez, from his position after the end of the current season.
The Catalan coach met with club president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco on Friday, and was informed that his services would be terminated at the end of the Seville match next Sunday.
Although Barcelona’s statement did not address the reason for dismissing Xavi, it is known that the decision came because of his statements in which he considered that Barcelona was unable to compete with Europe’s top players next season.
It is expected that Xavi will succeed German coach Hansi Flick, after he completed his agreement with Blaugrana officials on all the details to sign a two-season contract at Camp Nou.
Spanish newspapers had indicated that Flick’s announcement as Barca’s coach would occur on Monday after Xavi’s departure, but with things accelerating, the former Bayern Munich coach may be announced earlier.
