Barcelona Return Blocked? Al-Nassr Clause Threatens João Félix’s Free Transfer Dream

João Félix remains determined to fulfill his dream of returning to FC Barcelona in the summer of 2027, but a specific clause in his current contract with Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Nassr could prevent the Portuguese star from leaving as a free agent, keeping his long-term future under the Saudi club’s control.

According to Spanish publication Sport, player agent Jorge Mendes informed Barcelona hierarchy of his client’s strong desire to wear the Blaugrana shirt once again. However, the potential signing is not currently viewed as a priority by the club’s board or head coach Hansi Flick.

Contract Clause Grants Al-Nassr Unilateral Extension Rights

Félix’s current deal with Al-Nassr is set to expire on June 30, 2027, which theoretically would allow him to head back to Europe on a free transfer while accepting a salary reduction to facilitate a move to Catalonia.

However, a report from 365Scores revealed that the agreement includes a clause giving Al-Nassr the right to unilaterally extend his contract without requiring a new signature from Félix, provided specific conditions regarding length, remuneration, and activation deadlines are met.

Al-Nassr officials are planning a meeting with Mendes to resolve the player’s future, a step that could effectively derail any hopes of a free transfer and force Barcelona into direct transfer negotiations with the Saudi club.

Resurgent Form at Al-Nassr and International Success

Félix has rediscovered his finest form since moving to Saudi Arabia. During the 2025–2026 campaign, he netted 20 goals and delivered 13 assists across 33 Saudi Pro League appearances, guiding Al-Nassr to their first league championship in seven years.

The 26-year-old was named Saudi Pro League Player of the Season for his stellar campaign, outpolling teammate Cristiano Ronaldo and picking up nine Man of the Match awards.

Across all competitions, Félix recorded 30 goals and 22 assists in his first 55 matches for Al-Nassr, and has carried that momentum into the current campaign with 4 goals and 3 assists in his opening 7 appearances.

His club form has carried over to the international stage with Portugal, where he scored the winner against Wales before netting in a 2–1 victory over Norway, marking two goals in his first two international caps under newly appointed national team manager Jorge Jesus.

Félix’s Previous Stint at Barcelona

Félix previously spent the 2023–2024 season on loan at Barcelona from Atlético Madrid, making 44 appearances in all competitions while contributing 10 goals and 5 assists.

During his spell in Catalonia, he scored notable goals in both La Liga fixtures against parent club Atlético Madrid, alongside UEFA Champions League strikes against Porto and Royal Antwerp. Despite these moments, inconsistent form and financial constraints prevented Barcelona from making the move permanent.

While Félix considers playing for Barcelona the fulfillment of a childhood dream, his willingness alone will not suffice this time around, given Al-Nassr’s extension option and his uncertain fit within Flick’s sporting project.
