Barcelona is on the verge of elimination from the 2026 Champions League after losing 2-0 to Atlético Madrid in the first leg of their quarter-final tie at the Camp Nou.
Things became even more complicated for Barça when young defender Pau Cobarsi was sent off in the 44th minute for bringing down Giovanni Simeone when he was through on goal. Although the referee initially showed a yellow card, a VAR review confirmed the straight red card for the 19-year-old.
The Catalan side’s woes didn’t end there. From the resulting free-kick, Julián Álvarez unleashed a stunning strike into the top corner, giving Atlético the lead.

At the start of the second half, coach Hansi Flick tried to get his team back into the game by bringing on Xavi and Fermin López. Despite being a man down, Barcelona continued to dominate possession and control the game, but to no avail.
In the 70th minute, Alexander Sørloth delivered the final blow with a volley, capitalizing on a cross from Matteo Ruggeri.
For the second time this season, Barcelona will have to stage a comeback against Atlético Madrid, but the difference is that Flick’s men will have to do it at Diego Simeone’s home ground.

Barcelona had lost 4-0 to Atlético Madrid in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final, before winning the return leg 3-0 at Camp Nou, but still missed out on a place in the final.
Now, Barça, who returned from the Wanda Metropolitano last Saturday with a 2-1 victory, hope to secure another win and advance to the semi-finals for the second consecutive year, a task that appears extremely difficult.
