Renowned transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Moroccan midfielder Azzedine Ounahi is on the verge of joining one of European football’s most historic giants, following his sensational performances for the Morocco national team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Following Girona’s relegation from La Liga, Ounahi has been actively seeking a new club to match his career ambitions. Over the last few hours, Ajax has entered intense negotiations with the Catalan club to secure the midfielder’s signature.
While Ounahi is free to leave Girona by triggering his €25 million release clause, Ajax is currently negotiating with the Spanish side in hopes of lowering the transfer fee.
The Dutch giants’ strong interest in the Moroccan international is driven directly by their manager, Míchel. Having coached Girona in recent seasons, Míchel knows Ounahi exceptionally well, and the two share a strong professional relationship.
Although Ajax faces stiff competition from several Saudi Pro League clubs, Ounahi’s current preference is to remain in Europe’s top leagues. The prospect of moving to Amsterdam holds significant appeal for him, especially given the ambitious sporting project led by Míchel and sporting director Jordi Cruyff.
Ounahi was a standout performer at the 2026 World Cup, scoring a crucial brace against Canada in the Round of 16 before the Atlas Lions were eliminated in the quarterfinals following a 2-0 defeat to France.
This potential signing comes as Ajax continues its sweeping squad overhaul following two deeply disappointing seasons. The Eredivisie club has already made waves in the summer transfer window by securing German goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen from Barcelona on a loan deal.
