Atletico Madrid have officially announced the signing of South Korean international Lee Kang-in from Paris Saint-Germain to bolster Diego Simeone’s attacking options ahead of the new season.
The 25-year-old playmaker has penned a five-year contract, keeping him with the Rojiblancos until June 2031. Media reports estimate the transfer fee at approximately €35 million, plus add-ons.
Lee Kang-in emerged as Atletico’s primary target after their pursuit of Bernardo Silva fell through. The Portuguese star was initially viewed as the top choice to replace Antoine Griezmann and inject creativity and experience into the frontline.
While Atletico’s management made significant progress negotiating with Silva following the expiration of his contract at Manchester City, Real Madrid and manager José Mourinho hijacked the deal in the final stages, convincing him to move to the Santiago Bernabéu instead.
Bernardo ultimately chose Real Madrid, signing a contract through June 2028 despite Atletico’s persistent efforts. Consequently, Atletico pivoted swiftly to secure the South Korean talent.
Lee offers versatile tactical options for Simeone, capable of operating as an attacking midfielder or on either wing. He is no stranger to La Liga, having previously delivered impressive performances for Valencia and Mallorca before joining PSG in 2023.
During his spell in France, the South Korea international made 124 appearances for PSG, scoring 16 goals and providing 16 assists. His decorated tenure includes two UEFA Champions League titles alongside three Ligue 1 trophies and several domestic honors.
