Atlético Madrid suffered their second consecutive defeat after their resounding 4-0 victory over Barcelona in the first leg of the 2026 Copa del Rey semi-final.
The Rojiblancos had already suffered a heavy 3-0 loss to Rayo Vallecano in La Liga last Sunday, sparking a wave of criticism against Diego Simeone.
Today, Atlético failed to secure a win again, settling for a disappointing 3-3 draw against Club Brugge in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 play-off.
Atlético Madrid took a 2-0 lead through goals from Julian Álvarez and Ademola Lookman, but the home side managed to equalize through Onideka and Trisoldi early in the second half. An own goal by Ordóñez in the 79th minute gave the Spanish club the lead, and everyone thought the tie was over.
Atletico Madrid failed to hold onto their lead, as Tzolis scored a 90th-minute equalizer for Club Brugge.
It’s worth noting that Atletico had already suffered a defeat before the Barcelona match, losing 1-0 to Real Betis. This brings their record in their last four matches to one win, two losses, and a draw, significantly increasing the pressure on Simeone.
It’s also worth mentioning that Atletico Madrid’s new owners are seriously considering sacking Simeone next season, and if the poor results continue at this rate, he could be dismissed after a long tenure of over 14 years.
