Atletico Madrid decides to sack Diego Simeone

Sky Germany reports that Atletico Madrid’s management has decided this season will be Diego Simeone’s last at the helm of Los Rojiblancos.

Simeone has been managing the capital club since December 2011 and is credited with the remarkable transformation that has brought Atletico back into contention both domestically and in Europe.

According to the latest report, Atletico Madrid’s new owners are concerned about the team’s inconsistent performances this season under Simeone.

Meanwhile, the Argentine’s relationship with sporting director Mateo Alemany is extremely strained, and the owners are inclined to support the Spaniard over the current coach, thus ending Simeone’s tenure at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Atletico Madrid has already begun searching for Simeone’s successor, with the choice currently between Villarreal’s Marcelino and Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola.

Simeone’s contract with Atlético Madrid runs until the summer of 2027, meaning the club’s management will have to negotiate with him to compensate him for his early dismissal.

During his 15 years at Atlético Madrid, Simeone led the team to two La Liga titles, two Europa League titles, two UEFA Super Cups, one Copa del Rey title, and one Spanish Super Cup.

He also guided Atlético Madrid to two Champions League finals, but failed to lift the trophy, losing both finals to city rivals Real Madrid.
