An online petition launched by an Argentine fan has surpassed 94,000 signatures, demanding a replay of the 2026 FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Spain.
Gisela Sánchez initiated the campaign on Change.org shortly after the final whistle. The petition rapidly gained momentum, attracting over 80,000 signees within days before crossing the 94,000 mark.
Titled “Replay the World Cup Final Between Argentina and Spain Without the Corrupt Referee,” the campaign urges FIFA to order a rematch with an entirely new officiating team.
The petition strongly criticizes Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić, alleging that several controversial decisions impacted the outcome of the match, while calling on FIFA to review key refereeing calls.
Despite the widespread traction, petitions on Change.org hold no legal or regulatory authority over FIFA. Fan grievances regarding officiating do not constitute valid grounds to overturn or replay an officially sanctioned match.
Spain won the 2026 World Cup after defeating Argentina 1-0 in the final on July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Ferran Torres scored the decisive winner in extra time, securing Spain’s second World Cup title following their 2010 triumph, while Argentina finished as runners-up.
