Argentina star suffers ACL injury, ruling him out of the 2026 World Cup

Strasbourg striker Joaquin Panichelli suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee while on international duty with Argentina.

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) confirmed the news on Friday, after previously announcing that the 23-year-old would undergo tests following the injury sustained in training the day before.

Panichelli is the top scorer in Ligue 1 this season with 16 goals in 27 appearances. He was participating in only his second training camp with the Argentine national team, having made his debut for the Albiceleste in a friendly against Angola last November.

This injury will sideline Panichelli for the remainder of the season, meaning he will miss the World Cup finals this summer, as ACL injuries typically require around nine months to recover.

Panichelli only joined Strasbourg last July, having scored 20 goals in 40 appearances in the Spanish second division for Córdoba in the 2024-25 season, while on loan from Deportivo Alavés.

At this Argentina camp, Panichelli was part of an attacking group that included Lionel Messi, Julián Álvarez, and José Manuel López.

Lionel Scaloni’s team is scheduled to play Mauritania and Zambia in home friendlies after the cancellation of their “Fainalesma” match against Spain.
