The Daily Mail has revealed the compensation paid by Manchester United to Ruben Amorim following his dismissal as manager on Monday.
The Portuguese coach’s contract with the Red Devils was still valid until the summer of 2027, meaning the English club was obligated to pay him all his remaining wages until then.
According to the report, Amorim was earning an annual salary of £6.5 million, and with a year and a half remaining on his contract, his total wages amounted to £10 million.
In total, Amorim cost Manchester United £27 million, comprised of his total salary, £8 million paid to Sporting Lisbon to allow him to leave in November 2024 and move to Old Trafford, and an additional £900,000 paid to enable him to start immediately without waiting until the summer.
Despite the hefty price tag of hiring Amorim, the 40-year-old was statistically one of the worst managers in Manchester United’s history, winning only 30% of his matches – the lowest win percentage since before Sir Alex Ferguson’s era.
As he left Manchester United’s training ground for the first time, Amorim was seen smiling in front of the media, revealing that he wasn’t angry about his dismissal. On the contrary, he seemed to finally feel relieved after a grueling 14-month ordeal.
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner is reportedly United’s preferred candidate to succeed Amorim, but this would first involve appointing an interim manager until the end of the season, before taking over the Austrian coach in June 2026.
