The Spanish newspaper AS revealed that Xabi Alonso received a formal offer in recent hours to return to coaching in the Bundesliga, just days after being dismissed from Real Madrid.
Alonso’s coaching career began to flourish when he left Real Sociedad’s reserve team and took over at Bayer Leverkusen in October 2022, leading the German club to its first-ever domestic double.
In the summer of 2025, Alonso left Leverkusen to manage Real Madrid, but his tenure lasted only six months, ending in dismissal after a 3-2 loss to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final.
According to the latest report, Eintracht Frankfurt has offered Alonso the opportunity to take over immediately, replacing the sacked Dino Toppüller.
The Frankfurt management is looking for a world-class coach with the necessary experience in German football and a proficient attacking, collective style of play, making Alonso the ideal candidate.
However, it seems unlikely that Alonso will agree to return to the Bundesliga now, as the coach aspires to manage a big club after leaving Real Madrid.
The Frankfurt offer coincides with a report from The Athletic that Liverpool’s management is monitoring Alonso’s situation and considers him their top choice to replace the expected departure of Dutch coach Arne Slot.
The Reds’ management does not want to sack Slot now and is averse to the idea of changing managers mid-season. Currently, the thinking is that Alonso will take over next summer.
It appears that Alonso is well aware of the situation at Anfield and prefers to wait before considering any other offers to return to his former club, especially since Slot’s dismissal could happen sooner than expected if the team continues to drop points in the Premier League.
