Algeria settles on a “global” successor to Djamel Belmadi to lead the national team

Algerian media reported that the Algerian Football Federation is close to resolving the issue of the new coach for the national team by contracting with an international name.

Djamel Belmadi resigned after a long journey that extended from 2018 to 2024 in leadership of the Desert Warriors, and since last January, the search has been in full swing for a new coach for the national team.

According to recent reports, the Algerian Federation reached an agreement with Swiss coach Vladimir Petkovic to succeed Belmadi.

The 60-year-old coach has great experience, as he previously coached the Swiss national team for a period of 7 full years, and he also had a successful adventure with the Italian team Lazio, with whom he won the Italian Cup for the 2012-2023 season.

Since his dismissal from coaching French club Bordeaux in 2022, Petkovic has not supervised the training of any club or national team yet.

It is noteworthy that Petkovic’s name was also put forward in Egypt before the appointment of sacked coach Rui Vitoria, but the coach of Bosnian origins apologized for not taking over the job at the last minute.
