Kylian Mbappé’s current situation is alarming, no matter how much Real Madrid’s management tries to downplay it. The player is now at risk of a torn ACL in his knee, which would be a major blow to everyone involved.
Real Madrid had announced in an official statement that Mbappé suffered a knee sprain, and that the Frenchman would not undergo surgery but would instead receive conservative treatment.
However, Cadena SER radio indicated that Mbappé is likely suffering from a partial ACL tear, and is on the verge of a complete rupture. The only way to avoid this scenario is through surgery or complete rest.
Mbappé doesn’t want to miss the 2026 World Cup, and with only 100 days left until the tournament kicks off, his decision is to rest and undergo conservative treatment, and not return to the pitch until he is 100% certain of his recovery.
The Spanish newspaper Marca revealed that Mbappé consulted renowned French knee surgeon Bertrand Sonnery-Cottet, who has treated numerous high-profile players, including Zlatan Ibrahimović and Neymar.
Mbappé reportedly lacks confidence in Real Madrid’s medical staff, particularly after the Spanish club’s doctors provided conflicting diagnoses of his injury, prompting him to travel to France for a second opinion.
While Real Madrid hopes Mbappé will be available for the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie against Manchester City, the player is unwilling to take any risks and believes he needs a longer rest period, potentially until mid-April.
