The controversy surrounding offensive chants during the match between Al-Taawoun and Al-Hilal has escalated from widespread outrage into an official disciplinary sanction impacting the club and its supporters, following days of demands for decisive intervention to protect players from human tragedy exploitation.
The administrative action followed the conclusion of proceedings by the Disciplinary and Ethics Committee of the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF), which reviewed the match incidents and official reports regarding behavior originating from a section of the home supporters.
The Disciplinary and Ethics Committee ordered Al-Taawoun to play their next two home fixtures in the Saudi Pro League behind closed doors with complete stadium closure, rendering the penalty one of the most severe collective sanctions related to spectator behavior in the history of the competition.
The incident involved individuals chanting the name of the late Diogo Jota while Ruben Neves was positioned nearby, attempting to provoke the Al-Hilal midfielder using the name of his former Wolverhampton Wanderers and Portugal international teammate, who passed away alongside his brother André Silva in a traffic accident in July 2025.
Neves reacted by pointing toward the sky, subsequently stating after Al-Hilal’s 6-0 victory: “I just hope they don’t go to pray after what they did… God saw them,” reflecting the profound impact of an incident that transgressed the boundaries of sporting rivalry.
Cristiano Ronaldo interjected to demand harsher penalties, with the Al-Nassr and Portugal captain asserting: “The league must act and punish this type of behavior; this is no longer football,” adding that those involved should be permanently banned from entering any stadium.
Al-Taawoun condemned the chants while rejecting their attribution to their wider fanbase, maintaining that the behavior stemmed from isolated individuals and did not reflect the values of the club, while pledging necessary action against those responsible. SAFF and the Saudi Pro League also condemned what they characterized as unacceptable practices prior to referring the case to relevant authorities.
