Al-Ahly continues its tireless pursuit of a world-class coach, and Mahmoud El Khatib’s latest move was to make a huge offer to Portuguese coach Bruno Lage.
Lage was just fired from coaching Benfica after losing to Qarabag in the Champions League, but he is still considered one of the best Portuguese coaches in recent years and has achieved numerous accomplishments.
According to CNN Portugal, Al-Ahly has sent an official offer to Bruno Lage, with an annual salary of €3.5 million, plus bonuses. This is more than three times what the coach was receiving at Benfica.
Lage has not yet made a final decision on whether to accept or reject the offer, and has asked for time to discuss it with his family before making a final decision.
In general, Lage wants to return to coaching quickly, but he is hesitant about leaving Europe and working in Africa at the moment. However, the large financial offer he received from Al-Ahly could change things completely.
The 49-year-old Lage took over as coach of Benfica’s first team in 2019, the most significant experience of his career. In 2021, he moved to the English Premier League, taking over as coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers. In 2023, he coached Brazilian club Botafogo, before returning to Benfica in 2024.
During his career, Lage won one Portuguese league title with Benfica, two Portuguese Super Cups, and one Portuguese League Cup.
