Al Ahly have sent a decisive message regarding their stance on Mohamed El Shenawy following his recent controversy with Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan, announcing a contract extension for the team captain and national team goalkeeper through the 2027–2028 season.
El Shenawy signed his new deal during a meeting with Essam Serageldin, Head of Transfers, and Wael Gomaa, Director of Football, with Al Ahly keeping financial details regarding salary and bonuses undisclosed.
The extension comes shortly after Hossam Hassan sparked widespread debate when explaining El Shenawy’s omission from the national team camp, claiming he brought the goalkeeper back into Egypt’s 2026 World Cup squad despite him being “finished” with his club at the time.
Al Ahly responded with an official statement stressing that undermining the technical or moral value of any player representing the club is strictly unacceptable, describing the remarks made against their captain as “unacceptable in form and substance.”
Hossam Hassan later sought to clarify his position, stating: “My comments about Mohamed El Shenawy were misunderstood. I respect everyone and did not intend to belittle anyone,” explaining that his remarks referred specifically to the goalkeeper’s previous shoulder injury.
El Shenawy has won 27 trophies with Al Ahly, including 8 Egyptian Premier League titles, 7 Egyptian Super Cups, 5 Egypt Cups, 4 UEFA/CAF Champions League titles, 2 CAF Super Cups, and the Three Continents Cup, alongside being named African Interclub Player of the Year in 2022.
The 37-year-old goalkeeper rejoined Al Ahly in 2016 following spells with Tala’ea El Gaish and Petrojet, having amassed 344 appearances in an Al Ahly shirt through December 2025 and keeping 187 clean sheets.
