Al-Ahli temporarily soars to the top of Saudi League with a victory in the Jeddah derby

Al-Ahli secured a resounding 3-1 victory over their city rivals Al-Ittihad in the Jeddah derby, played at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium (The Shining Jewel) on Friday evening.

In the 26th round of the league, Al-Ahli opened the scoring early through Ivan Toni in the 23rd minute, before Fabinho equalized for Al-Ittihad in the second half from the penalty spot.

Al-Ittihad’s resistance didn’t last long against the onslaught of Al-Ahli attacks, culminating in Riyad Mahrez’s goal in the 59th minute, putting Al-Ahli back in the lead.

Mahrez became the first player to score in both legs of the derby since Omar Al-Somah in the 2019-2020 season.

Amid Al-Ittihad’s attempts to mount a comeback, Firas Al-Buraikan sealed the victory for Al-Ahli in the 84th minute.

Matthias Jäsle now holds the record for most wins for Al-Ahli in Jeddah derbies with four, equaling Christian Gross’s record.

With this victory, Al-Ahli temporarily tops the Saudi Pro League standings, reaching 62 points.

Al-Ahli’s continued lead depends on Al-Nassr, who will face Neom on Saturday without their star player and top scorer, Cristiano Ronaldo, due to injury.
