The 28-year-old player refused to renew his contract with Al Ahly and moved to Al Shamal on a free transfer last summer, but he quickly left a noticeable void in the Red Devils’ midfield.

Al Ahly wants to bring back Akram Tawfik

According to Egyptian newspaper reports, Al Ahly has identified Akram Tawfik as their top choice to bolster their midfield in the upcoming transfer window, especially with the expected departure of Aliou Dieng.

The Malian international has already agreed to join Valencia on a free transfer next summer after negotiations to renew his contract with Al Ahly failed due to his high financial demands.

The search for alternatives to replace Dieng has begun, and one of the proposals is to bring back Akram Tawfik, especially since the player is dynamic and can be relied upon in more than one position besides his primary role in midfield.

Akram Tawfik is unhappy in Qatar

According to the same reports, Akram Tawfik is unhappy in Qatar and wants to return to the Egyptian Premier League, specifically to Al Ahly.

The reports also indicated the player’s dissatisfaction with his current role at Al Shamal SC in Qatar, and therefore, he wants to wear the red jersey again if the opportunity arises.

The desire of both Al Ahly and Tawfik aligns here, leading many to predict that the deal is close to being finalized and that previous financial disagreements will not recur.

The truth about Akram Tawfik’s return to Al Ahly

Omar Nagi, Akram Tawfik’s agent, categorically denied the rumors circulating about his client’s desire to return to Al Ahly, emphasizing the Egyptian international’s happiness in Qatar and his wish to remain there for as long as possible.

Nagi stated, “There is absolutely no truth to the rumors about Akram Tawfik wanting to return to play in the Egyptian Premier League or feeling unsettled with Al Shamal SC.”

He added, “Akram Tawfik is a professional player, fully committed to his contract with Al Shamal SC, which runs until the summer of 2028. His complete focus at the moment is on helping the team win the league title.”

He concluded, “Recently, negotiations began with Al Shamal officials regarding the possibility of extending Akram Tawfik’s contract for another five seasons.”

What has Akram Tawfik achieved with Al Shamal so far?

Since joining Al Shamal last summer, Akram Tawfik has played 20 matches for the team across the Qatar Stars League and the Qatar Stars Cup, totaling 1013 minutes, during which he provided two assists.

Tawfik’s team still has a chance to win the Qatar Stars League title. They currently sit in second place with 37 points, just two points behind leaders Al Sadd, with a game in hand. Therefore, winning the title is still possible, provided they win their remaining three matches.

Despite his consistent participation, Akram Tawfik was not included in the Egyptian national team squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, nor in the last international break when the Pharaohs played friendlies against Saudi Arabia and Spain.

His last international appearance was in the 2025 Arab Cup in Qatar with the reserve team. He hasn’t played for the senior national team under Hossam Hassan since June 2024 for technical reasons.
