Barcelona goalkeeper Ter Stegen underwent successful back surgery on Tuesday in Bordeaux, France. The Catalan club reassured fans that the German star’s condition was stable.
Ter Stegen had failed to participate in Barcelona’s group training since the start of the pre-season due to lower back pain. He ultimately decided, in agreement with the club, to undergo surgery, even if it meant he was sidelined for a long period.
The question remains about the length of Ter Stegen’s absence, which will determine the Catalan club’s position on signing new goalkeeper Juan Garcia.
The 32-year-old German had emphasized in his statement announcing the surgery that he would only be out for three months, a major challenge to Barcelona and a message to La Liga to prevent Garcia from being signed in his place.
According to Sport, Ter Stegen’s expected absence could reach five months, but certainly not less than four. Barcelona will be working to prove this to La Liga in the coming days.
La Liga doctors are scheduled to examine Ter Stegen’s medical records and the player’s medical records next week. They will then confirm whether he will be out for at least four months, or whether he will need a shorter period, leaving Barça unable to sign anyone in his place.
It’s worth noting that Barcelona wants Ter Stegen to leave to save on his huge salary. However, based on current information, he will likely remain at least until next January, when he is expected to leave on loan to avoid missing out on a chance to play for Germany in the 2026 World Cup.
