Al Ahly’s search for a new foreign coach continues, with a steady stream of apologies, this time from a renowned Portuguese coach in Egyptian football.
Al Ahly made an official offer to former Portugal national team coach Fernando Santos, but he declined, citing his desire to work in Europe. This has also happened with several other candidates, most notably Sergio Conceicao and German Marco Rose.
According to Egyptian media reports, Al Ahly attempted to sign former Egypt national team coach Carlos Queiroz, who is currently coaching the Oman national team, and sent him a substantial financial offer in the past few hours.
However, Queiroz also rejected Al Ahly’s offer, stressing that he is not interested in working with clubs at the moment, preferring to focus on his work with the Oman national team, less than a month before the start of the crucial Asian playoffs for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Al Ahly’s options are narrowing once again, and the current favorite remains former Egypt national team coach Rui Vitoria. However, Portuguese newspapers confirm that he is not keen on the idea and prefers to wait a little longer after his departure from coaching Panathinaikos of Greece a few days ago.
With this trend, Emad El Nahhas is expected to continue as Al Ahly’s interim coach until the next international break, and will also be in charge of the upcoming match against Zamalek on September 29.
