Journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed that Manchester City’s management has been making moves in recent days to keep Rodri at the Etihad Stadium for as long as possible, shortly after Real Madrid’s interest in signing him emerged.
Rodri’s contract with City still runs until the summer of 2027, while Spanish media reported that Real Madrid intends to try to sign him next year, taking advantage of the fact that the English club will then lower its financial demands to make a profit from the deal rather than letting him leave for free the following year.
According to Romano, City absolutely does not want Rodri to leave and has therefore offered him a two-year contract extension, keeping him with the English giants until the summer of 2029.
City is tempting the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner with a salary package. The new contract will see him become the second-highest-paid player in Pep Guardiola’s squad, after Erling Haaland, whose weekly salary exceeds £500,000.
Meanwhile, City’s offer to Rodri comes even before it’s confirmed he’s recovered from his cruciate ligament injury, further demonstrating the English club’s confidence in him regardless of what happens next season.
So far, Rodri, 29, has not made a final decision on whether to accept or reject the offer, although it’s likely he will prefer to remain with City unless he receives assurances from Real Madrid that they are willing to make a move for him and are willing to pay millions to secure his services next summer.
