Atlético Madrid suffered a bitter 3-0 defeat at the hands of Rayo Vallecano at the Teresa Rivero Stadium, in the 24th round of La Liga.
This defeat comes after the Rojiblancos’ resounding 4-0 victory over Barcelona in the Copa del Rey semi-final last Thursday.
Diego Simeone’s men appeared fatigued, stunned by two goals in the final five minutes of the first half, scored by Fran Pérez and Óscar Valentín in the 40th and 45th minutes respectively.
Atlético tried to mount a comeback and salvage at least a point, but Noël Mendy sealed their fate with a third goal in the 76th minute.
This defeat marks Atlético Madrid’s fifth loss of the season in La Liga, leaving them with 45 points in fourth place, level with third-placed Villarreal.
Rayo, based in Madrid, raised their points tally to 25, placing them 16th and temporarily escaping the relegation battle by two points over Valencia.
