Virgil van Dijk has re-emerged as a primary target for AC Milan, after prominent journalist and club insider Carlo Pellegatti claimed that the Dutch defender will move to the Rossoneri sooner or later.
Van Dijk’s current contract with Liverpool expires in the summer of 2027, opening the door for a reduced-fee transfer in January or a free agent move upon the expiration of his contract if both parties do not reach a renewal agreement.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Pellegatti stated: “Van Dijk will arrive at AC Milan sooner or later,” insisting that he is not inventing the story and comparing skepticism over his claim to the initial doubts surrounding Zlatan Ibrahimović’s return to the Italian club.
A Delayed Pursuit Rather Than a Done Deal
According to the report, Van Dijk previously expressed openness to the prospect of playing at the San Siro, with discussions progressing to a mutual understanding on personal terms before he ultimately chose to remain Liverpool captain following a challenging campaign.
AC Milan are exploring two avenues to complete the transfer: paying a nominal fee to secure the defender prior to the end of his contract, or waiting until the summer of 2027 to sign him on a free transfer—a strategy that would allow the club to allocate its budget toward his wages and signing bonus.
However, the file remains in the stage of media speculation and mutual interest, with no formal negotiations officially announced between Milan and Liverpool. The English club continues to hold on to their captain, viewing him as a cornerstone of their sporting project.
Van Dijk joined Liverpool from Southampton in January 2018 for approximately €85 million, making nearly 380 official appearances while registering 36 goals and 16 assists.
The Dutch center-back has won the UEFA Champions League, two Premier League titles, the FIFA Club World Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, the FA Cup, and two League Cups, making him an immediate elite option for Milan should he decide to conclude his English spell in 2027.
