Barcelona announced in an official statement that its Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain will not be played at Camp Nou due to a failure to obtain the necessary government permits.
Barcelona had planned to return to Camp Nou for the La Liga match against Real Sociedad on Sunday, September 28, thus preparing the stadium for PSG’s European match. However, Joan Laporta’s hopes were dashed once again.
According to Barcelona’s statement, the club has agreed with Montjuïc Stadium (Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium) to host the Paris Saint-Germain match, the same stadium where the Catalan club has played its European matches for the past two seasons.
Barcelona finds itself in a real predicament. UEFA regulations stipulate that all league matches must be played at one stadium. Thus, even if the Camp Nou is ready, Hansi Flick’s side will not be able to play European matches there before the Round of 16.
Catalan media previously reported that UEFA might make an exception for Barcelona, allowing them to play their upcoming matches at the Camp Nou if they received the necessary permits. However, relations between the club and Aleksander Ceferin’s administration have been strained recently, ruling out this option for now.
The date for Barça’s return to playing their matches at the Camp Nou remains unknown, although the new plan is for the stadium to be ready after the next international break.
