A crisis hinders Real Madrid’s completion of its second summer signing

Real Madrid refuses to pay the release clause in Álvaro Carreras’s contract with Benfica, while the Portuguese club insists on the full amount (€50 million), which represents a stumbling block in the signing of the left-back.

Real Madrid has had an agreement with Carreras on all personal terms for some time, and negotiations with Benfica began last week to finalize the deal.

According to Marca, Real Madrid wants to pay only €35 million for Carreras, in addition to other bonuses based on individual and collective success.

At the same time, Benfica is insisting on €50 million, especially since Manchester United will have a percentage, which will reduce the Portuguese club’s profit.

Carreras remains Real Madrid’s first choice to bolster the left-back position, but Florentino Pérez’s administration believes that paying €50 million for him is not a good idea, and that this figure is too high.

If Benfica’s intransigence continues, it’s not unlikely that Real Madrid will resort to a backup plan, namely Bayer Leverkusen left-back Alejandro Grimaldo, who will cost the club no more than €35 million.

Real Madrid hopes to close the deal for Carreras quickly so he can participate in the Club World Cup, even though the matter appears extremely complicated so far.
