A big surprise… De Gea could return to Manchester United!

Manchester United is preparing to pull off one of the biggest surprises of the current summer transfer window by signing its former goalkeeper, and current Fiorentina goalkeeper, David de Gea.

The Spaniard is a goalkeeping legend at United, having spent 12 years in the Red Devils’ goal, from his move to Old Trafford from Atletico Madrid in 2011 until his departure at the end of his contract in the summer of 2023.

After leaving United, De Gea spent a year at home without a club, then moved to Fiorentina in the summer of 2024. He spent last season with the Italian club and was one of the most prominent stars in Serie A.

According to journalist Alan Nixon, Manchester United are considering signing De Gea as a transfer option this season until a permanent replacement is found next year.

United currently have André Onana, but he has completely lost the confidence of Ruben Amorim, and Altay Bayındır is seen as only a backup option, forcing United to move and look for a cheap option to fill this gap, albeit temporarily.

United initially settled on De Gea after discovering that his Fiorentina contract contained a very small release clause. Given the player’s familiarity with the Old Trafford atmosphere, he seemed the ideal choice for Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his management.

It is worth noting that Manchester United have been linked with a move for Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain, but the Italian goalkeeper is currently on the verge of joining Manchester City.
