Rúben Amorim has reopened the chapter on his difficult tenure with Manchester United, launching a fresh critique at club legends who consistently targeted him during his time at Old Trafford.
The current AC Milan manager offered his remarks when questioned about the pressure of managing historic clubs and the influence of former players turned influential media pundits.
“I previously worked at a club that has a lot of legends, and they have strong opinions and speak a lot,” Amorim stated.
The Portuguese coach added, in a clear reference to United: “They lived in an era that was completely different.”
Gary Neville, Roy Keane, and Paul Scholes were among Amorim’s fiercest critics, with Scholes notably asserting prior to his dismissal that Amorim was not the right man for the job and failed to grasp the identity of Manchester United.
Amorim departed the club in January 2026 after 63 matches, recording 24 wins, 18 draws, and 21 defeats. His first season ended with a 15th-place finish—the club’s lowest ranking in Premier League history—alongside a loss in the UEFA Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur.
The 41-year-old manager has since launched a new chapter with AC Milan, starting the Serie A campaign with victories over Torino and Venezia followed by a 1-1 draw against Juventus, securing seven points from his opening three fixtures.
While his role at Milan subjects Amorim to comparable historical pressure, he emphasized that constructing a winning side requires patience, acknowledging that consistent victories remain the only way to earn time at the San Siro.
