Harry Kane has expressed confidence in the strength of his case for the 2026 Ballon d’Or after concluding the most prolific goalscoring season of his career, while acknowledging that the final decision is now out of his hands and rests entirely with the voting journalists.
Speaking in an interview with TNT Sports, the Bayern Munich striker reflected on a historic campaign in which he combined record-breaking individual tallies, domestic silverware, and key contributions for England at the FIFA World Cup.
Kane Awaits the Voters’ Verdict
“Of course, it’s out of my hands now; it’s up to the voters and the people making the decision,” Kane said.
“The season I had was by far the best of my career, and we’ll just have to wait and see what happens,” he added.
He continued: “It’s a strange feeling because my focus has already shifted to the new season, and I’m always asking myself: Can I get better? Can I improve? But I also want to appreciate what I’ve achieved.”
“Football is full of opinions and debates. Everyone prefers a player for their speed, intelligence, or finishing ability. That’s what makes the game special, and the Ballon d’Or is part of that conversation.”
“I’m just happy to be among the contenders, and we’ll wait to see the result,” he concluded.
During the interview, the England captain received an audio message from Michael Owen—the last English player to win the award back in 2001—who expressed his wish to see Kane join the elite group of English winners.
Commenting on the message, Kane said: “I feel immensely proud when I hear words like that from a player like Michael. I grew up watching him in an England shirt. Not too long ago, I was just a fan dreaming of becoming a professional footballer.”
73 Goals and a Historic Season with Bayern
Kane scored a staggering 73 goals for Bayern Munich and England over the past season, netting 61 times for the Bavarian club and adding 12 goals for the Three Lions.
The English striker scored 36 goals in 31 Bundesliga appearances to secure his second European Golden Shoe. He also added 14 goals in 13 UEFA Champions League matches, alongside 10 goals in 6 DFB-Pokal fixtures.
Kane spearheaded Bayern to a domestic league and cup double, netting a hat-trick in a 3–0 victory over Stuttgart in the DFB-Pokal final, while Bayern’s Champions League run concluded at the semi-final stage.
He also provided 7 assists across 51 appearances for Bayern, proving his influence extended beyond goalscoring through his playmaking, deeper tactical drops, and pressing leadership.
Regarding comparisons to Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, Kane remarked: “I grew up watching their dominance. Messi is the only one who scored more, with 82 goals, while Ronaldo’s best season reached around 69 goals.”
“I used to look at those numbers as insane, and they still are. They are the best of our generation and perhaps in history, so scoring 73 goals leaves me amazed even at myself.”
Additionally, Kane scored 6 goals at the FIFA World Cup, helping England record their best-ever performance on foreign soil before finishing the tournament in third place.
The 33-year-old aims to become the fifth English player to win the Ballon d’Or, and the first since Owen, when the ceremony takes place in London on October 26.
