Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad are closing in on the signing of Dutch midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum on a free transfer, extending the former Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain player’s stint in the Saudi Pro League following the conclusion of his time with Al-Ettifaq.
Journalist Ben Jacobs revealed that Wijnaldum is undergoing medical examinations ahead of signing a one-year contract that includes an option for an additional season, though no official announcement has been issued by Al-Ittihad as of yet.
At 35 years old—turning 36 in November—Al-Ittihad are betting on Wijnaldum’s deep experience and versatility across central midfield, alongside his familiarity with Saudi football and the advantage of completing a deal with no transfer fee required.
The former Dutch international had previously been linked with a potential move to Chelsea after the English transfer window closed, taking advantage of free-agent registration rules. Although reports suggested initial contacts from the London club, Fabrizio Romano later dismissed claims that Chelsea intended to finalize a deal.
Wijnaldum joined Al-Ettifaq from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2023, spending three seasons with the club where he wore the captain’s armband. He made 101 appearances across all competitions, scoring 38 goals and providing 17 assists to total 55 direct goal contributions.
Having launched his senior career at Feyenoord before impressing at PSV Eindhoven, Wijnaldum earned moves to Newcastle United and Liverpool. During his time at Anfield, he played 237 matches, winning the UEFA Champions League, Premier League, and FIFA Club World Cup. Following spells at Paris Saint-Germain and Roma, he now awaits final clearance to begin his second Saudi chapter with Al-Ittihad.
