Luka Modrić has settled his international future, deciding to continue playing for Croatia and putting an end to speculation surrounding his career following their Round of 32 exit against Portugal at the 2026 World Cup.
The AC Milan midfielder communicated his decision to new head coach Slaven Bilić and Croatian Football Federation president Marijan Kustić, with the federation confirming that their iconic captain will feature in the upcoming UEFA Nations League squad.
Bilić Celebrates Modrić’s Commitment
Bilić welcomed the news, stating: “Luka’s decision makes me extremely happy, and we all know what he brings to Croatia both on and off the pitch.” The manager expressed enthusiasm about reuniting with Modrić 14 years after their previous tenure together.
The pair share a long history dating back to the early stages of Modrić’s international career. Bilić coached him in the youth setup before managing him in the senior national team for six years—a period that laid the foundation for the midfielder’s status among Croatian footballing greats.
An Unstoppable International Career
Modrić has earned 202 caps and scored 29 goals since making his senior international debut in March 2006. As Croatia’s most-capped player, he captained the national team to a runner-up finish at the 2018 World Cup, third place at the 2022 World Cup, and a silver medal in the 2023 UEFA Nations League.
The veteran star’s next international appearance will come against the Czech Republic in Croatia’s Nations League opener on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at 20:45 CET at the Fortuna Arena in Prague, followed by a fixture against Spain three days later.
