Atlético Madrid utility player Marcos Llorente has unexpectedly announced his retirement from international football, drawing the curtain on his Spain career at just 31 years of age.
The decision comes just weeks after Spain were crowned 2026 FIFA World Cup champions. Llorente emphasized that his choice was made well in advance, regardless of his participation in the tournament or La Roja‘s eventual title victory.
Llorente described his retirement as a “personal, carefully considered, and heartfelt decision” reached after a lengthy period of reflection. While acknowledging that he remains young and physically capable of continuing, he cited no specific tactical or physical reason for stepping away.
The versatile player concludes his international career with 27 caps for Spain, during which he registered four assists and zero goals across 1,625 total minutes since making his senior debut against the Netherlands in November 2020.
Llorente represented Spain at UEFA Euro 2020 (held in 2021) as well as the 2022 and 2026 World Cups. His final appearance for La Roja came against France in the semi-finals of the latest World Cup, prior to Spain securing the trophy against Argentina in the final.
At the club level, Llorente progressed through Real Madrid’s youth academy before debuting for the senior team. Following a standout loan spell at Deportivo Alavés, he returned to Real Madrid and eventually sealed a transfer to Atlético Madrid in 2019, where he has since surpassed 300 appearances.
During his time with Real Madrid, Llorente won the UEFA Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup, later adding a La Liga title with Atlético Madrid in the 2020–21 season—before choosing to close his international chapter on the ultimate high by lifting the World Cup.
