The Egyptian Football Association has renewed the contract of Hossam Hassan, extending his tenure as head coach of the Egypt national team through to the 2030 FIFA World Cup. The contract of Ibrahim Hassan, the team director, was also extended to maintain technical and administrative stability.
The decision serves as a reward for Hossam Hassan following his guidance of Egypt to its most successful World Cup campaign in history during the 2026 edition, where the team advanced beyond the group stage for the first time and reached the round of 16.
The legendary striker took charge in February 2024, succeeding Portuguese manager Rui Vitória. He managed his first match against New Zealand in March of that year before leading Egypt through an unbeaten qualification campaign for both the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2026 World Cup.
At the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, the Pharaohs reached the semi-finals and concluded the tournament in fourth place following defeats to Senegal and subsequently Nigeria on penalty shootouts—a major milestone that solidified the association’s confidence in the coaching staff.
The national team subsequently delivered a historic performance at the 2026 World Cup, securing 5 points in the group stage against Belgium, New Zealand, and Iran. They then eliminated Australia on penalties in the round of 32 before narrowly bowing out to Argentina 3-2 in the round of 16.
Hossam Hassan has managed the Egypt national team in 35 matches, recording 20 victories, 9 draws, and 6 defeats (counting the penalty shootout victory against Australia among the wins).
The challenges of his new contract begin with the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, where Egypt will face Angola, Malawi, and South Sudan, alongside competing for the 2027 and 2028 continental titles and qualifying for the 2030 World Cup—all while gradually rebuilding the squad for the post-Mohamed Salah era.
