Ajax have officially announced the signing of Moroccan international Sofyan Amrabat, marking the midfielder’s return to the Eredivisie following an extensive European career.
Amrabat joins the Amsterdam giants on a free transfer, having reached a mutual agreement to terminate his contract with Fenerbahçe just hours prior to the official announcement.
The 30-year-old midfielder signed a contract running through June 30, 2028, with sporting director Jordi Cruyff emphasizing that Amrabat’s international experience and deep familiarity with Dutch football will enable him to adapt quickly.
Amrabat began his professional career at FC Utrecht before transferring to Feyenoord in 2017, later departing the Netherlands after a single season to join Belgian side Club Brugge.
The Moroccan star went on to represent Hellas Verona, Fiorentina, Manchester United, and Fenerbahçe, spending the previous season on loan at La Liga club Real Betis.
On the international stage, Amrabat made his senior debut for Morocco in 2017, earning over 75 caps for the Atlas Lions while featuring in the 2018, 2022, and 2026 FIFA World Cups, playing a pivotal role in Morocco’s historic run to the World Cup semi-finals in Qatar.
Amrabat becomes the latest addition to Ajax’s summer recruitment drive, following the free acquisition of Julian Brandt, the loan signing of Marc-André ter Stegen from Barcelona, and the transfer of Ukrainian winger Viktor Tsygankov from Girona.
Ajax are relying on Amrabat’s experience and defensive presence at holding midfield to add balance to manager Míchel Sánchez’s squad as the club looks to restore its domestic and European status during the upcoming campaign.
