Atlético Madrid have intensified their efforts to sign Juventus forward Jonathan David, making the Canadian international one of the main solutions considered by the Spanish club to solve an unexpected central striker crisis.
Fabrizio Romano revealed that discussions are ongoing with David’s representatives alongside direct contact between Atlético and Juventus, clarifying that the player features among three primary names on the club’s shortlist before the transfer window closes.
The deal’s structure remains the main hurdle; a loan move has been suggested alongside a potential swap that would send Alexander Sørloth to Juventus and David to Madrid. Neither party has reached a final agreement regarding the operation’s layout.
This pursuit is directly tied to Julián Álvarez’s situation after the Argentine expressed his desire to leave, favoring a move to Barcelona. Atlético refuse to negotiate with the Catalan club and maintain a valuation near €150 million. Álvarez has faced fan jeers and missed three consecutive training sessions due to illness.
Sørloth’s injury has compounded Diego Simeone’s tactical challenges, forcing him to deploy Ademola Lookman as a central striker despite acknowledging it is not his natural position. Atlético scored four goals in their opening two league matches, though none came via a recognized center-forward.
David made 46 appearances for Juventus across all competitions during the 2025–2026 season, scoring 8 goals and providing 5 assists, following an 87-goal tally over 178 Ligue 1 matches with Lille. Despite lower numerical output in Italy, his movement, pace, and all-around link play align with Atlético’s tactical requirements.
Atlético bolstered their squad this summer with Ademola Lookman, Morten Hjulmand, Alejandro Grimaldo, Lee Kang-in, and Cristian Romero, but have yet to add a natural center-forward.
