Álvaro Morata is close to continuing his career in Spain’s second division after Leganés reached a verbal agreement to sign the experienced striker on loan from Como, in one of the summer’s most surprising moves.
Journalist Fabrizio Romano revealed that Morata had already travelled to Spain ahead of a medical scheduled for the weekend, after which he is expected to sign the contracts and begin a new chapter with the Madrid-based club.
The deal required Leganés and Como to agree on sharing the player’s high salary, with the Italian club set to cover a significant portion in order to complete the loan. The 33-year-old is leaving after failing to score in 26 Serie A appearances last season and registering only one assist.
Morata’s career has declined noticeably over the past two years. He joined Milan in the summer of 2024 but left six months later after scoring six goals in 25 appearances. He then moved to Galatasaray, where he rediscovered some of his form, before joining Como in the summer of 2025 without managing to secure a regular place or regain his scoring touch.
The Spanish striker has represented Real Madrid, Juventus, Chelsea, Atlético Madrid, Milan, Galatasaray and Como. He has won the Champions League twice, league titles in Spain and Italy and several domestic cups, as well as the Turkish league and cup, while experiencing football outside his homeland in England, Italy and Turkey.
At international level, Morata captained Spain to the 2024 European Championship and had previously won the 2023 UEFA Nations League, in addition to European titles at under-19 and under-21 level. After a distinguished career with some of the continent’s biggest clubs, the former La Roja captain is preparing for an unexpected challenge with Leganés in the second division.
