Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone has announced the return of Julián Álvarez to the squad for Sunday’s clash against Villarreal in the second round of La Liga, opening the door for his first appearance of the season in a Rojiblancos shirt.
The Argentine striker missed the 2-0 opening-day victory over Málaga after the technical staff determined he needed additional training sessions to regain full match fitness following his late return from the 2026 World Cup.
“Julián will be in the squad tomorrow,” Simeone said. “He has improved and is regaining his rhythm. We will try to manage his minutes during a difficult match against an opponent with quality players.”
The Argentine coach added: “Julián is a crucial player for us to achieve our objectives. We need him and will support him on the pitch. As long as he remains with the team, I will work to protect him.”
Álvarez’s return comes amid a final attempt by Barcelona to convince Atlético Madrid to sell the forward. However, the capital club maintains that the player is strictly non-negotiable, despite the Argentine’s strong desire to embark on a new chapter at the Camp Nou.
Simeone also called on Atlético fans to respect Álvarez following hostile chants sparked by anger over his transfer stance, stating: “I always respect our supporters, but I do not agree with insults or abuse,” emphasizing that his previous statements had been misinterpreted.
“Every word is now scrutinized by people waiting to create conflict and uncertainty,” Simeone continued. “But there are no doubts whatsoever: Miguel Ángel Gil Marín was clear—Julián is our player and we need him.”
