Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki’s transfer from Parma to Paris Saint-Germain has collapsed after the French club decided to withdraw due to massive and unexpected financial demands regarding commissions from the player’s representatives.
According to journalist Fabrice Hawkins, the agents’ demands surfaced in the final stages of negotiations, prompting Paris to cancel Suzuki’s scheduled trip for medical examinations and to finalize the transfer.
The European champions had already reached an agreement with Parma to sign the goalkeeper for a financial package of 35 million euros. They had also agreed with Suzuki on a five-year contract before everything changed at the last minute.
The Japanese goalkeeper was not expected to start the season at the Parc des Princes. PSG’s plan was to buy him and then loan him out to Juventus for a season, given the presence of Lucas Chevalier and Matvey Safonov in Luis Enrique’s squad.
With Paris withdrawing, not only did the purchase deal fall through, but the anticipated loan to Juventus also collapsed, leaving the Italian club forced to return to its previous list of goalkeeper candidates.
However, the deal’s collapse opened another door for Suzuki, as Aston Villa moved quickly to sign him and initiated official contacts with Parma and the player’s representatives.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the English club showed its willingness to match the terms of Paris’s offer by presenting a financial package close to 35 million euros, alongside a long-term contract for the 23-year-old goalkeeper.
Aston Villa’s move is not isolated from the uncertainty surrounding Emiliano Martinez’s future, as Juventus returned on the same day to inquire about the possibility of signing the Argentine goalkeeper before the summer transfer window closes.
Aston Villa had previously rejected a modest offer from Juventus to buy Martinez and insisted on keeping him, but the club’s success in signing Suzuki could change its stance and open the door for the World Cup winner’s departure.
Juventus continues to study several options for its goal. Their shortlist includes Martinez, Fenerbahce goalkeeper Ederson, and Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, following the missed opportunity to loan Suzuki from Paris.
Suzuki joined Parma permanently in the summer of 2024 after his stint with Belgian side Sint-Truiden, before his value increased thanks to his performances in Serie A and his brilliance with the Japanese national team during the recent World Cup.
