Monaco has informed Paul Pogba’s representatives of its desire to mutually terminate the player’s contract, following a season in which the attempt to restore the former World Cup winner to his usual level proved unsuccessful.
According to the newspapers Nice-Matin and Le Parisien, the French club wants to reach a financial agreement before the transfer window closes on September 1, giving Pogba the opportunity to find a new team. However, the final decision remains in the player’s hands.
Monaco’s move came prior to a new left thigh injury Pogba sustained during the team’s training camp in England, having played only 45 minutes during pre-season friendlies.
The club had decided to evaluate the player’s physical condition during the preparation period, but the latest injury reignited the concerns that have surrounded his stint since arriving in the Principality.
Pogba joined Monaco on a free transfer in June 2025 on a two-season contract. However, he had to wait until November to make his debut due to successive fitness issues and injuries to his thigh, ankle, and calf.
The 33-year-old was limited to participating in just 6 Ligue 1 matches last season, totaling a mere 115 minutes. He started only one match, failed to register any goals or assists, and was excluded from Monaco’s Champions League squad due to his ongoing physical struggles.
Pogba arrived at Monaco after a lengthy absence that began with a suspension following a failed doping test during his time at Juventus in September 2023. He was initially banned for four years before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) reduced the suspension to 18 months, ruling that his ingestion of the banned substance was unintentional.
This harsh ending follows a career that established Pogba as one of the standout midfielders of his generation. He shone with Juventus, winning the Italian Serie A four times, before returning to Manchester United in 2016 in a record-breaking deal worth around €105 million, where he won the Europa League and the League Cup.
Pogba also earned 91 international caps and scored 11 goals for France, serving as one of the heroes of their 2018 World Cup and 2021 UEFA Nations League triumphs. Now, his agreement to terminate his Monaco contract has become necessary to launch a fresh attempt to salvage what remains of his career.
