Arne Slot has rejected the opportunity to take over as the head coach of the Netherlands national team, succeeding Ronald Koeman, as he prefers to wait for a new opportunity in club football in the upcoming period.
The Dutch manager revealed to Voetbal International magazine that he had held exploratory talks with his country’s football association. He confirmed that he made his decision within a week, and not due to a dispute over salary or contract length, as rumors suggested.
Slot stated: “At this stage of my career, I prefer to be on the training pitch with the players every day, and that is not available in the same way with national teams.”
He added: “It would be a great honor to represent my country as the national team coach one day, but this was not the right time for me.”
Slot began his managerial career with AZ Alkmaar before leading Feyenoord to the UEFA Europa Conference League final, and subsequently winning the Eredivisie and the KNVB Cup. He then moved to Liverpool in the summer of 2024 to succeed Jurgen Klopp.
The 47-year-old manager led the Reds to the Premier League title in his first season but departed in May 2026 after the team’s results declined during the following season, despite securing UEFA Champions League qualification.
Slot’s name has been linked with Ajax, and he also entered the radar of Saudi club Al-Ahli as a potential successor to Matthias Jaissle. However, the Dutch coach prefers to continue working within the European continent.
Michael Reiziger, the Netherlands youth team coach, emerges as one of the strongest candidates to succeed Koeman, alongside Louis van Gaal, who has expressed his readiness to return. Peter Bosz also remains among the proposed names despite being under contract with PSV Eindhoven until 2028.
Meanwhile, Erik ten Hag has ruled himself out of the race, confirming he will continue in his current role at Twente, leaving the Dutch Football Association with limited options ahead of the start of the UEFA Nations League campaign.
