Istanbul has emerged as a strong contender to host the 2027 Spanish Super Cup (Supercopa de España), as the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) prepares to move the upcoming edition away from Saudi Arabia on an exceptional one-year basis.
Egypt was also among the early options considered, following preliminary contacts with the RFEF to explore the feasibility of staging the tournament in Cairo. However, despite the appeal of the Egyptian bid—backed by a massive local fanbase for Spanish football—it did not materialize into a final formal offer, allowing Istanbul and Miami to pull ahead in the bidding race.
Miami Slightly Leading Istanbul and Qatar Bids
The RFEF has yet to make a final decision, with the Turkish bid competing against rival proposals from Miami and Qatar. Spanish reports currently indicate that the American city holds a slight advantage over Istanbul in the race for hosting rights.
The tournament will maintain its standard four-team Final Four format, featuring two semi-final clashes followed by the championship final in the winning host city.
Why Saudi Arabia Is Not Hosting the 2027 Edition
The temporary departure from Saudi Arabia is due to the kingdom hosting the 2027 AFC Asian Cup from January 7 to February 5, creating a direct scheduling and logistical conflict. This does not mark the end of the RFEF’s long-term partnership with Saudi Arabia; rather, it represents a one-off relocation for a single edition.
The Spanish Federation has provisionally scheduled the tournament for early February 2027, with exact dates and venues to be confirmed once the host nation is officially selected.

The competition began its international journeys in 2018 when Tangier, Morocco, hosted a single-leg final between Barcelona and Sevilla. The tournament transitioned to Saudi Arabia under the four-team format in 2020, returned to Andalusia in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and was subsequently staged in Riyadh from 2022 to 2024 and in Jeddah for the 2025 and 2026 editions.
Should Istanbul be selected, Turkey would become the third foreign country to host the Spanish Super Cup after Morocco and Saudi Arabia, reinforcing the RFEF’s strategy to expand the commercial and global reach of Spanish football.
