After years as one of Barcelona’s primary leaders, Marc-André ter Stegen has launched a new chapter in his career, seeking a fresh opportunity to restore his standing among Europe’s elite goalkeepers. The German international has joined Ajax on a season-long loan through June 30, 2027, with no purchase option, reuniting with manager Michel following a disappointing end to his time in Catalonia.
Ter Stegen Reveals Disappointment Over Barcelona Favoring Joan García
Ter Stegen made no secret of his disappointment regarding how his tenure at Barcelona concluded, confirming he was fully fit to play before the club designated Joan García as the first-choice goalkeeper.
Discussing his physical condition, Ter Stegen stated: “At Barcelona, I started playing a bit later than at Ajax, but I’ve been training since July 2nd. I am at peak fitness and very happy to enjoy being on the pitch without any issues.”
The goalkeeper noted he was prepared to compete for Barcelona, but the coaching staff opted for full reliance on Joan García, prompting his exit in search of consistent playing time. Reflecting on the decision during his earlier introduction at Girona, he remarked: “They chose Joan, who is doing a great job, and I respect that completely. The competition between us was very healthy, but I wanted continuity and playing time,” emphasizing how difficult it was to leave Barcelona after nearly 12 years.
Beyond Barcelona Frustration: Ter Stegen Sets Sights on Ajax Success
Ter Stegen acknowledged that negotiations for his move to Ajax took longer than expected due to complex terms, saying: “Good things take time. In the end, everything worked out well, and I’m glad to be here.”
He highlighted the role of sporting director Jordi Cruyff in convincing him to join: “When I first spoke with Jordi Cruyff, I immediately felt this was the right choice. I know the manager and Daley Blind as well; I spoke with them about the project, and they were very convincing.”
Regarding his objectives in Amsterdam, Ter Stegen added: “We want to bring Ajax back to the top. It is a historic club with a rich legacy, and I am confident this will be a successful season.” He also joked about former teammate Frenkie de Jong’s involvement in his welcome video: “He’s my agent! Frenkie knows Amsterdam very well, he’s always honest, and his words gave me great reassurance.”
From Barcelona Glory to Injury Struggles: The Context Behind the Disappointment
Ter Stegen signed for Barcelona from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2014, going on to make 423 appearances for the club—placing him second all-time among goalkeepers behind Víctor Valdés. The German shot-stopper lifted over 20 trophies with Barca, including the UEFA Champions League and seven La Liga titles, while securing the Zamora Trophy in the 2022–23 campaign by conceding just 18 goals.
However, injuries disrupted his rhythm in recent seasons. He suffered a complete rupture of the patellar tendon in his right knee in September 2024, missing roughly seven months. Following back surgery, his fitness challenges persisted during his loan spell at Girona, where he was limited to two appearances before a hamstring injury ruled him out for the remainder of the season.
