Once considered assured of securing a new term, the FIFA president now faces a shifting landscape of global football alliances, driven by an organized opposition movement led by European football authorities questioning his governance.

Infantino Reaches Out to Trump Administration Amid Escalating Crisis

Following the collapse of the proposed “FIFA Forward Enterprise” project, Infantino reportedly attempted to contact U.S. President Donald Trump and senior administration officials in a bid to secure support against the rising opposition campaign.

According to the New York Post, Infantino made multiple attempts to reach Trump and sought a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio under the theme of utilizing football as an instrument of American soft power.

A State Department official denied that any call between Rubio and Infantino had been scheduled. However, sources indicate Infantino is seeking political backing to stabilize his position. His commercial initiatives included proposed involvement from Thrive Capital, managed by Joshua Kushner, brother of Jared Kushner.

UEFA Leads Campaign Against FIFA Leadership

The crisis intensified after Infantino proposed creating a new commercial entity valued at an estimated $20 billion to manage FIFA’s commercial activities and tournaments, offering private investors a 20% stake for $4.2 billion.

UEFA rejected the proposal, citing secret negotiations and a lack of consultation with continental confederations and member associations. European nations threatened to boycott FIFA competitions before Infantino ultimately withdrew the plan.

Withdrawal of the project has not resolved the conflict. UEFA declared a loss of confidence in FIFA’s current leadership, confirming that all options—including efforts to end Infantino’s presidency—remain on the table. UEFA legal counsel instructed FIFA and 18 senior officials to preserve all documentation and communications related to the project, pending potential legal, regulatory, or arbitration proceedings.

European Associations Withdraw Support

The Football Association of Wales (FAW) formally withdrew its support for Infantino’s 2027–2031 candidacy, citing failures in governance, leadership, and transparency.

Serbia and Sweden have similarly confirmed they will not support Infantino in the upcoming election, while reports indicate the English Football Association (FA) is preparing a similar position. Other European member associations—including Germany, Norway, Denmark, and Romania—had previously refrained from issuing formal endorsement letters.

Prior to the crisis, Infantino had secured support pledges from nearly 200 of FIFA’s 211 member associations. European officials are now seeking to build a coalition to present an alternative candidate ahead of the official nomination deadline on November 18, 2026.

Origins of the Governance Rift

Infantino assumed the FIFA presidency in 2016 with significant European backing following his tenure as UEFA Secretary General. However, relations between the governing bodies have steadily deteriorated over global competition structures.

Previous points of contention included FIFA’s proposal for a biennial World Cup, the expansion of the Club World Cup, and unilateral international calendar adjustments.

Tensions mounted during the 2025 FIFA Congress when Infantino delayed his arrival to participate in a diplomatic tour alongside Trump and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, leading UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin and several European delegates to walk out in protest.

Controversies during the 2026 World Cup—including the administrative intervention regarding U.S. forward Folarin Balogun’s suspension and entry visa issues for Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan—further alienated European leadership. The commercial stake proposal ultimately served as the catalyst for a complete breakdown in governance trust.
