Key figures within UEFA have begun searching for a credible candidate to challenge Gianni Infantino in the upcoming FIFA presidential election, with Paris Saint-Germain President Nasser Al-Khelaifi emerging as a leading figure capable of uniting federations frustrated by the Swiss administrator.
According to RMC Sport, Al-Khelaifi’s name was heavily circulated behind the scenes at UEFA ahead of the election scheduled for March 2027 in Rabat, Morocco, where Infantino seeks to extend his decade-long tenure.
While no formal nomination has been put forward by UEFA, several member associations sought to persuade Al-Khelaifi to launch a campaign, leaning on his strong relationships with European clubs and his ability to bridge connections with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
Al-Khelaifi Firmly Rejects Candidacy
The Qatari executive firmly shut down the rumors. A source close to Al-Khelaifi confirmed to RMC Sport that he has “no ambition, intention, or interest” in running for the FIFA presidency, dismissing the media speculation as unfounded.
Al-Khelaifi intends to remain fully focused on his leadership roles at Paris Saint-Germain and within European club football, supporting continental and global governing bodies without engaging in a direct electoral battle against Infantino.
