Free agent midfielder Leon Goretzka has opened the door to a potential move to FC Barcelona this summer, offering his services to the Catalan club as he determines his next career step.
The 31-year-old German midfielder believes playing under head coach Hansi Flick once again could help him return to his peak performance level. Flick previously trusted Goretzka with a vital role during their trophy-laden era together at Bayern Munich.
Goretzka became a free agent following the expiration of his Bayern contract on June 30, after both parties mutually agreed not to extend his deal, closing an eight-season chapter at the Allianz Arena.
Barcelona’s Transfer Priorities Lie Elsewhere
Despite Goretzka’s interest, FC Barcelona does not currently view signing a central midfielder as an urgent priority given the abundance of existing options in Flick’s squad. Consequently, the Catalan board has not initiated formal negotiations with Goretzka’s camp.
Barcelona’s main focus for the summer transfer window remains signing a versatile, world-class striker capable of contributing to build-up play as well as finishing. Atletico Madrid’s Julián Álvarez remains the club’s primary objective, with Barca directing the bulk of their financial resources toward strengthening the front line.
A Proven Partnership Under Hansi Flick
Goretzka and Flick enjoyed a remarkably successful spell at Bayern Munich between 2019 and 2021. Forming a formidable midfield tandem alongside Joshua Kimmich, Goretzka was instrumental in Bayern’s historic sextuple-winning campaign in 2020 before the two worked together again with the German national team.
Barcelona is not the only club linked with the German international. AC Milan held preliminary talks with his representatives, while Juventus, Napoli, Arsenal, and Atlético Madrid—who attempted to sign him in the January window—have all shown interest.
