The French Football Federation (FFF) has officially announced the appointment of Zinedine Zidane as the new manager of the France national team, succeeding Didier Deschamps after a historic 14-year reign at the helm of Les Bleus.
Four-Year Contract Targeting Euro 2028 and World Cup 2030
Zidane has signed a four-year contract starting August 1, 2026, which runs through to the end of the 2030 FIFA World Cup. His primary objectives include leading the national team at UEFA Euro 2028 before steering them into the subsequent World Cup.
While the FFF did not officially disclose his compensation, media reports indicate that Zidane will earn approximately €300,000 per month, which could rise to €450,000 including performance-based bonuses.
An Emotional Unveiling: “I Waited 5 Years for This Day”
An emotional Zidane was brought to tears during his presentation press conference, stating: “It is an immense joy, and I am filled with emotion.” He added: “I have waited four or five years for this day, and I am ready to embrace the challenge.”
The French legend revealed that he repeatedly turned down club offers to hold out for the national job: “I received various proposals over the past five years and rejected them all because managing the France national team was the only thing I wanted to do.”
Transitioning from Club Football: “France Is an Extension of My Career”
Addressing the transition from daily club management to international football, Zidane asserted: “I know managing a national team is different from a club, but that does not intimidate me.” Drawing a parallel to his managerial successes in Spain, he noted: “It will be similar to what I achieved at Real Madrid; leading France is a natural extension of my career.”
Zidane outlined his tactical philosophy, emphasizing balanced, attacking football: “I played as a number 10, so scoring goals is what motivates me, but balance is essential.” His primary tactical challenge will be maximizing the potential of Kylian Mbappé, Michael Olise, Bradley Barcola, and Désiré Doué, while restoring defensive solidity to a squad that finished fourth at the 2026 World Cup.
Debut Match and Managerial Track Record
Zidane’s tenure begins with an away fixture against Turkey on September 25 in the UEFA Nations League, followed by clashes against Belgium and Italy.
His previous managerial career was exclusively with Real Madrid, where he oversaw 263 matches, recorded 172 victories, and claimed 11 major trophies—most notably three consecutive UEFA Champions League titles and two La Liga crowns.
