According to Egyptian news outlet Cairo 24, Simeone attended the World Cup Round of 16 clash between Egypt and Argentina at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The Argentine manager witnessed Shobeir’s impressive display—highlighted by a crucial penalty save against Lionel Messi—and subsequently made inquiries about the goalkeeper’s profile, though no official offer has been submitted by Atletico Madrid yet.
The 26-year-old shot-stopper, son of former Egypt and Al Ahly legend Ahmed Shobeir, came through Al Ahly’s youth academy before stepping up to the first team, capitalizing on Mohamed El Shenawy’s absence to establish himself as a reliable starter.
Record-Breaking Club and International Career
Shobeir produced an exceptional campaign during Al Ahly’s 2023–24 CAF Champions League title run, setting a tournament record with 9 consecutive clean sheets. He saved the first 23 shots he faced in his initial appearances and kept clean sheets in both legs of the final against Tunisia’s Espérance.
