Spain national team striker Borja Iglesias has playfully mocked the prospect of shaking hands with U.S. President Donald Trump during the trophy presentation following the 2026 World Cup final against Argentina.
Donald Trump is scheduled to attend the final match at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, where he will join FIFA President Gianni Infantino to present the iconic trophy and medals to the newly crowned world champions.
When asked by Panenka magazine in a video interview whether he would shake the American President’s hand on the podium, Iglesias laughed and replied: “I don’t want them to throw me in prison.”
The Spanish forward admitted he had already envisioned the scenario, adding: “I hope it happens in a moment of pure joy, that it passes quickly, and that I just forget about it.”
The 33-year-old player emphasized that he wishes to avoid creating a political controversy ahead of the tournament’s biggest match, despite his well-known public stances and past criticisms of Trump regarding various social and political issues.
Iglesias clarified that his pragmatic approach does not mean he is backing down from his convictions: “People know my thoughts, and I like to take a stand. But I am not omnipotent, and there are moments that are beyond my control. It’s complicated.”
The Spanish striker is renowned for his progressive stances, outspoken defense of human rights, equality, and opposition to the far-right. He has previously stated his fear of the far-right “because it knows no boundaries,” explaining his deeply reserved attitude toward interacting with Trump at the World Cup final.
Although Iglesias has seen limited playing time during La Roja’s tournament run, he remains an influential figure in the locker room, helping maintain a strong family atmosphere among the squad. Now, he hopes that the awkward handshake with Trump will come only after Spain secures its second World Cup title in history.
